Construction: TOMI S.A.
The restoration of the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus aims to reestablish its importance in the cultural life of the city and highlight its status as an architectural monument. According to the intentions of the Directorate of Modern and Contemporary Architectural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture the restoration of the monument should not only eliminate the negative impact of past interventions and restore it to its original state, but also to bring the building up to date so that it may be able to host a variety of cultural events.
The history of the building demanded an economy of design solutions, material choices and construction methods that implement the concept, the compositional principles, the functional choices and the design strategies in general. All preparatory and stripping work on site was carefully monitored so that every part of the original structure, as well as the various construction methods that were revealed, free from subsequent additions and modifications, helped to successfully integrate all the required contemporary insertions that would update the Theatre.
Throughout the duration of the restoration works it was essential to revise and modify the architectural proposal according to the new data that were continuously discovered as the works progressed, in order to secure the preservation of the original monument while at the same time meet all the requirements and specifications of the supervising Directorate, as formed after the evaluation of the new findings. The discovery of the original baroque stage was the most important issue that had to be addressed during the work on site. The great significance of the building and the exceptional state of preservation of its stage, called for a full revision of the stage area.
