The sphere: the emergence of memory_embodying the symbolism_a new topography
The historically charged connotations of the square -tension- and its proximity to the sea -buoyancy- activate the emergence of an archetypal solid, a sphere. The sphere emerges in the centre of the square and symbolically embodies the genius loci and its references to memory. Despite its monumental scale and character the sphere continues to comprise an integral functional part of the square inviting the public to climb / walk on its surface. The pace of the visitor on its surface almost tends to cause its rotation – the implied continuance of the solid underground, the return to historic memory, while the direction of their path signifies the direction forward, towards the future.
The sphere breaks through in the center of the slightly slanted square surface. Around it, centrifugal and centripetal forces define links with points of interest in the greater square area. The sphere attracts and, at the same time, diffuses isotropically. It comprises a large scale seating area that offers views towards all directions around the square while at the same time becomes an imaginative urban stage. The sphere belongs equally to the visitor/viewer as well as to the visitor/performer.
